The Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute is a highly specialized hospital and research facility in the field of orthopedics and traumatology. In 1981 the Italian Ministry of Health declared the Rizzoli Institute for Hospitalization and Care in Science (IRCCS), recognizing the high level of health care achieved by the institute in the orthopedic and traumatology field.
The strength of the institute is in fact the close integration between the assistance activity and the scientific research activity carried out by the 9 research laboratories operating at the institute, where about 300 people are employed, including doctors, biologists, technicians and others professional roles. The institute also participates in the Emilia-Romagna High Technology Network with 6 laboratories and is the seat of university teaching.
On October 4, 2011, the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute signed an agreement with the Sicilian Region Health Department for the activation of an orthopedic and rehabilitation department in Bagheria in the province of Palermo, managed by the Institute.
Since February 2012, the Rizzoli-Sicilia Department, based at the “Villa Santa Teresa” facility in Bagheria, has therefore been operational for outpatient activities. In April 2012, hospitalization and surgery began.
