Bagheria (Baarìa in Sicilian) is an Italian town of 56,584 inhabitants in the province of Palermo in Sicily. Bagheria is also called Città delle Ville. After Palermo, it is the most populated municipality of the province and the twelfth most populous center of Sicily, located on the northern coast of the region 15 km from the capital. The name Bagheria originates from the Punic term bayharia, that is «zone that descends towards the sea»; according to other hypotheses, instead, it would derive from the Arabic bāb al-gerib, "door of the wind".
The most likely hypothesis, however, would seem to be that of the derivation from the Arabic bahriye, with the meaning of "marina". One of the first mentions of Bagheria dates back to 1134, in the Bacharìa form, to then become Baiarìanel 1573.
